I’ve been lucky enough recently to see a lot of carvings at a couple of shows. Both the Ohio Decoy Collectors and Carvers Association’s annual get-together in March and the
Ward World Championship in April boasted their usual collection of terrific work and good times. You’ll get to see a lot of it when you get Competition 2010 next winter. Which reminds me—I’d better get working on that.
You can also get a sampling of carvings from this year’s California Open right here in this issue. The palm frond division is a staple at that show and the entries this year were so spectacular we decided they deserved a Showcase feature. I was supposed to be at the show, but good ol’ Mother Nature nixed those plans by delivering a one-two punch to the East Coast in February, canceling all my flights out West. At least I can enjoy these carvings within the pages of the magazine. The Internet is great, but the old ink on paper is still hard to beat.
