Creating a Classic Part Two
Always popular with carvers, both the blue-winged and green-winged teal—the hens especially—are classically shaped, with small bodies adorned with handsome plumage. In the last issue, we covered carving the blue-winged teal and getting it ready for finishing. Here, we tackle painting the teal, which includes the distinctive wing patch that gives the species its name.
Getting the finish you want really boils down to patiently layering the plumage colors so they acquire a realistic depth and richness. With good reference material, and by not rushing the process, you’ll get the knack for creating the teal’s classic good looks.
