Wildfowl Carving Magazine to Publish Latest Workbench Project
September 13, 2017
New Cumberland, PA—For years, readers of Wildfowl Carving Magazine have eagerly awaited publication of the magazine’s workbench projects. This fall, the magazine adds to the acclaimed series of books with Loon and Chicks by Laurie J. McNeil, a step-by-step demonstration of how to carve, texture, and paint a beautiful life-size sculpture of a common loon with two babies.
Through detailed text and plenty of close-up photographs, McNeil explains exactly how she created this stunning carving. The book is loaded with the kind of information that will help anyone become a better carver, and its easy-to-open spiral binding makes it a natural fit for the workbench. Loon and Chicks includes patterns, reference photos, a supplies list, and paint charts—it’s like a carving class in book form.
Laurie J. McNeil is a world champion wildfowl sculptor and has instructed students throughout the United
States and Canada since 1985. She uses no knives with her projects. Instead, she has developed carving techniques exclusively around power carving. Working from a single piece of the highest quality tupelo wood, Laurie creates one-piece sculptures that will stand the test of time. She demonstrates her techniques in this highly anticipated book.
“My husband, Jeff, had been telling me for some time that I should carve another common loon,” McNeil says. “After all, people started calling me ’The Loon Lady‘ because of all the loon pieces I have done over my 30-plus years of wildfowl carving. The common loon has always been my favorite bird to carve.”
Loon and Chicks will be available for general release in November, with a cover price of $29.95. Wildfowl Carving Magazine book club members will receive it at a reduced price in October.
Wildfowl Carving Magazine began publishing with its Spring 1985 issue. In the years since, it has included articles on every aspect of bird carving, from how to design an effective carving to how to safely ship one to a carving show. Ampry Publishing LLC, a subsidiary of Prime Publishing LLC of Northbrook, Illinois, purchased the magazine in March 2016.
